What is Counter Parenting?

Updated: Oct 24

Counter Parenting is the opposite of co-parenting. Instead of setting aside differences to parent effectively, one parent actively works against the other to undermine how they're raising the children. The counterparent is not doing this because the way the other parent is raising the child is harmful. Rather, they do it to spite the other parent.

Examples of Counter Parenting:

  • Let their kids do things the other parent would never allow

  • Badmouth the other parent in the presence of the child

  • Tell the child the other parent is to blame when something goes wrong

  • Prevent the other parent from speaking with the child during visits

  • Tell the child the other parent doesn't care about them

  • Encourage the child to be insubordinate

  • Disobey court orders

  • Prevents the child from getting any therapy

  • Constantly files court motions

  • Refuses to allow for any consistency for the child, claiming that it’s strictly their time

  • Is unreasonably uncooperative

  • Finds ways to hide assets or income to reduce his child support payment

  • Does the exact opposite of what you’ve told your child
